Class 1 - Main Lesson with Ms. Glick
Class 1 is steadily wrapping up their applied chemistry block this week with soap making and biography work on historical scientists that have contributed to modern chemistry advances.
Music with Mr. Joy
In music, we cover one new song per class. We start with a vocal warmup, sing the song through, discuss the lyrics, learn an accompaniment on the ukulele and then branch out to different instruments. In the end, we perform the song together as a band.
Class 2 - Main Lesson with Laurie
Main Lesson: Chemistry
We began this main lesson with a review of the Periodic Table and an introduction to the Hydrogen Wave Function. We discussed how electrons are both particles and waves (wave/particle duality) and how they exist as probability clouds around the nucleus. We then moved on to exploring the different chemical bonds (covalent, ionic, metallic) and spent some time trying to grow our own salt crystals while we looked into the structure of crystal lattices. The next topic we explored was CERN ( the largest particle collider in the world) and how results out of this institution are influencing pop culture. We also talked about the fact that the nucleus is not in fact the smallest building block of matter which has been proven by the experiments at CERN. We ended this main lesson with a science fair where the students presented an experiment of their choice to the school (these projects are available to view in the lower classroom in Saugeen Academy).
Applied Arts with Ms. Glick
As the classes continue their journey with bookbinding, woodcraft, and printmaking, we are adding a new dimension to their work by adding textiles! All classes will begin exploring weaving, felt crafting and plant dyeing this month.
